GNB Update

Here's to the upcoming weekend...And now, here's what's happening...

More mergers between two Georgia technical colleges. The Griffin Daily News reports that the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools approved the merger between Flint River Technical College in Thomaston, and Griffin Technical College in Griffin. SACS OK'ed that move at its meeting last month. It's the seventh such merger between technical colleges since July 1, 2009. The combined colleges will be renamed Southern Crescent Technical College.

Furloughs are forthcoming at another Georgia technical college. Full-time employees at Albany Technical College will be furloughed for up to three days. That's according to a request from Governor Sonny Perdue. Still, the furloughs won't affect how long the campus will remain open through the end of the current fiscal year on June 30.

Bibb County school employees could face more furloughs. WMAZ in Macon reports that the board of education there has called a special meeting for Monday to address the issue. Members talked about it briefly on Thursday, but stopped short of bringing it to vote until they could come up with alternatives to make up for any budget cuts.
