Macon Public Works Director Fired

The search for a new public works director has started in Macon.  Richard Powell was fired from that job Friday. That's according to 13wmaz.com. Powell had held that position for about two years, but was given no reason for his dismissal.

Music hall board votes to move out of Macon

Saying goodbye to Macon.  That's what the Georgia Music Hall of Fame board decided to do Wednesday. OnlineAthens.com reports that the board voted against Macon's proposal to keep the struggling museum afloat. Macon.com also reports that the board voted 6-3 against keeping the facility in middle Georgia. Officials aren't sure where the hall of fame will go to, although Athens was among the cities up for consideration.

Flint Riverquarium CEO steps down

The Flint Riverquarium in Albany is looking for a new boss. The Albany Herald reports that Riverquarium CEO Scott Loehr resigned Monday.  He's leaving to take a job with the Delaware Historical Society.  His last day on the job is on February 25.

Sluggish economy claims two Georgia JcPenney stores

Two JcPenney stores in Georgia will soon close their doors. Both the Associated Press and Albany Herald report that two stores in the metro Atlanta area are among the six outlets that will go out of business.  However, the Albany store will stay open.  Additionally, 20 stores and two outlets will soon shut down.

Shake-up in Albany hospital merger

The merger of two Albany hospitals costs almost two dozen people their jobs.  The Albany Herald reports that more than 20 employees at the Palmyra Medical Center failed to meet eligibility requirements specified by the soon-to-be former rival Phoebe Putney Hospital.  The local hospital authority reached an agreement to buy Palmyra Medical Centers in December.

Murder Mystery in Warner Robins?

Who killed former Warner Robins mayor Donald Walker?  That's the question authorities there hope to answer soon.  WRWR-TV reports that current mayor Chuck Shaheen was called before a grand jury in March 2010.  Shaheen told the grand jury that Walker may have been murdered by his wife, Patricia.  He died in 2009 after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Reward offered in whooping crane killings

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service needs your help to find out why three whooping cranes were killed in southwest Georgia's Calhoun County in late December.  Officials are offering a reward of more than 12-thousand dollars for information regarding the deaths of the endangered birds.

Houston schools to stay closed Tuesday

At least one extra day of vacation for school children in middle Georgia.  The Warner Robins Patriot reports that schools in Houston County will remain closed all day Tuesday.  EMA officials there fear that the roads are dangerous for any travel in the morning, due to the large amount of snow in the "Robins"
region.

UGA shuts down WNEG...
