GNB Update

It's less than a week until Christmas...Here's what's happening...

Many colleges and universities have public relations and marketing professionals. Not many of them have positions that focus solely on academic marketing. Columbus State University brought such a person on board Friday. The four-year institution named Jeffery Dodd as its director of academic marketing and communication. He starts his new job on January 11.

A major milestone for the state's flagship university. Nine faculty members from the University of Georgia earned fellowships from the American Association for the Advancement of Science earlier this week. The nine new fellows from UGA is a school record. They'll be honored at the organization's annual meeting in Sand Diego in February.

A well-known actor is coming to metro Atlanta to start off 2010. CSI:NY star Hill Harper will visit Kennesaw State University next month to be the keynote speaker for that institution's M.L. King and Black History Month celebrations. He also has a series of best selling books from the New York Times.

GNB Update

The first Friday post in a while...Here's what's happening going into the weekend...

Some new development near one Georgia campus. The board of trustees at Mercer University approved the plan Friday. It will cost $10 million to build. The new facilities on the Macon campus include a mix of residential and retail development.

Expect more hard times in 2010. That's the word from Georgia's school chief. Georgia school superintendent Kathy Cox says that the state's schools will have at least two rough years before education funding gets better, according to the Associated Press. She says that $39 million must be cut from the budget. More furloughs and bigger classes could come as a result of those cuts.

Some good news for several Albany schools. The Albany Herald reports that Robert Cross Middle School in Dougherty County won the Academic Bowl title Thursday. It beat rival Merry Acres by 50 points. Both of those schools, as well as two others, will advance to the regional tournament in Moultrie next month.
